Jawaahir (Ja-WA-heer) means "jewels" in Arabic.
This dynamic dance troupe was founded in 1989
by internationally acclaimed dance teacher and
choreographer, Cassandra Shore. Cassandra
has studied Middle Eastern dance for over 20
years and is widely considered one of the
premier performers of this ancient art form.
Jawaahir Dance Company captures the
essential spirit of Middle Eastern dance
— a sheer celebration of movement and
life that's as dynamic today as it was
centuries ago.
Playful, dramatic, and always joyous,
Jawaahir's eight members perform a
diverse repertoire of folkloric dances
that will expand your perceptions of
Middle Eastern dance. You'll hear the
traditional rhythms, see the distinctive
costumes, and experience the expressive
dance traditions of Egypt, Turkey, Lebanon,
Tunisia, the Saudi Gulf, and North Africa.

it affirms for us the vitality, the wonder,
and the drama of life.

solos and duets to large group pieces,
accompanied by taped music or live
orchestra. Whether you're looking for
a 45 minute multi-cultural program or
an evening-length performance,
Jawaahir provides education and
entertainment for all ages.

Ghawazee, the Gypsy dancers of
Upper Egypt, to the urban sophistication
of Cairo, from the dramatic dance rituals
of North Africa to the exuberant
